Farewell EN085 and Hello EN100

Being part of Dr. Rivera’s EN085 summer ‘09 class was a pleasure and also a good start. Despite the fact that EN085 is not accreditable, I am so thrilled that I had the opportunity to take Dr. Rivera’s class. Throughout the semester, I think Dr. Rivera has done an amazing job to bring us close together through her, and if it wasn’t for Dr. Rivera’s hard work-- we wouldn’t have this much fun. This class has woken my senses up to further pursuing my education and also a good warm-up. EN085 will forever remain a good part of my history, and thank you all for making it happen. See you guys in the fall semester!

Isabella Dendy

Farewell and Thank you!!!!

Well, let me start out with the warmest farewell to all of you, my most adorable classmates and most of all our perfect, humble, loving, kind, beautiful, and many more to describe professor. Classmates as I was saying in class today that it is always good to have old friends to help you grow old and new friends to help you stay young. You inspired me through out the whole semester, I learned so much from you and I thank you for that. I wish that I'll be able to see you next semester, and as we go on, I'll reflect on the inspirational quotes that we have shared in class with each other.

Dr. Rivera, I don't how to express myself to you, you already know that I will miss you and I'm praying that if you pass me, then I will try to register for your class. I wish that the other professors are nice like you. Thank you again, and I'll miss you and love you. God bless you.

My last blog

Dr. Rivera, I thank you for your time for teaching me more of English and understanding my needs as a student. I really don’t know if I’m going to have you as a teacher again, but if I do then it will be great to learn more from you. You’re a wonderful teacher!

To be honest, I don’t feel like celebrating today, because I’ve been thinking about the final composition yesterday. I realized that I messed up on my paper on that day, since I wasn’t focused. I felt pain in my body and I was stressed on that day. My paper didn’t get to the second page, not organized, had misspelled words, and grammar problems. I’m not going to be surprised that I might have to retake this class again, and perhaps this is my last time to take an English course.

I hope everyone has a great break before Fall 2009 semester starts. I must get myself ready to go back to GCC and continue my classes from there. Also, I won’t see any familiar faces there from UOG. Farewell.

~Bye

I Miss you!

Hi! Dr.Rivera and my classmates :)
I’m just eating vanilla ice cream and thinking of a message for you guys.
Well, I guess I know what to write farewell message.

I remembered I was really nervous and my steps were so heavy at the first day of class, because I was worried about making new friends. I was really lucky to join a really nice class, which has a really friendly and kind teacher and friends. This EN-085 was a really comfortable place for me, and I was happy to study with you guys. It’s really hard to say good bye, but I hope we can meet in the other class in the future. Thank you everyone for helping my terrible English. In the near future, I wish I can talk to you guys fluently in English. I really miss you and love you all.
Please keep in touch!

Dr. Rivera
Thank you for passing us!
Love you so much!!!

Kaori Isozaki

Thank you to everyone.

Summer school is now over, and another school year is coming. I don't know what the future holds for us, but I would like to wish all of you the best. To Dr. Rivera, I just would like to say that I am honored to be a one of your students. You are a role model to all of us, because you inspired us to dream, and motivate us to grow. Your kindness touched all of our hearts, and I would like to thank you for that. To my classmates, I would like to thank all of you for sharing your thoughts and dreams. Summer is finally over, and all of you made it memorable for me. I am happy to have all of you as my classmates. We finally did it; all the hard work and struggle, it's finally paid off. This is not my last goodbye, because I know I will still see all of you around the campus. I will miss all of you!

Anxious – That’s the word that described how I felt when this course began. After several weeks of learning the basics of how to write a good composition I have a new word to describe how I feel – Inspired. I am inspired by the encouragement that we all provided each other as a class, not to mention the excellent professor that made us feel like we could achieve anything. It has been a privilege to have spent the summer with a wonderful group of people. This course has truly motivated me to improve my writing skills. I may not be the best writer, at least not yet, but with the skills that I have gained from this course I am confident that I can continue to improve. I hope that you all feel the same confidence that I do to continue striving for self improvement. To my fellow classmates and Dr. Rivera, thank you for all the support and the good times. I wish everyone the best of luck in pursuing their goals. I hope to see you all in the next English level.

Let me leave you with a final quote:
“Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anyone else expects of you. Never excuse yourself.” By Henry Ward Beecher

To my EN085 class, I had a blast! It was fun getting to know each and every one of you. It's funny how we all come from different walks of life with different characteristics about ourselves, yet we still came together as friends. Thank you for bringing a new start in my positive attitude toward school. I was very nervous in the beginning, but you all have made it very comfortable after 11 years of not going to school. I appreciate you all! I'm even sad to think that we are not going to see each other in class on Monday. But, it's okay because we all PASSED! Please keep in touch with me. It was great!

To Dr. Rivera, I am glad that I came back to U.O.G. this summer. I don't think that I would have had a better teacher to help motivate what I know is a big step in life. Thank you for being a wonderful advisor. I hope to take another class from you in the future. And I will definitely see you around the School of Education! Take Care.

Since I forgot my quote this morning, here it is.

There is a difference between interest and commitment. When you are interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstances permit. When you are committed to something you accept no excuses only results !! -unknown

Please keep in contact and email me at naomi.guahan@gmail.com

It's been fun...

I would just like to say it has been my biggest pleasure getting to work alongside all of you. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Although the course has ended, the friendships made in class do not stop here. We're bound to bump into each other later in the long run. Dr. Rivera, thanks for all you have done with the class. We truly appreciate it. I do not want to say goodbye, so for now I'll just say catch you all later!

Moving on with Luck

Hi Everyone. It was hard to say goodbye today, but on Monday, I have an interview with Chris at the TRIO office 10:00 a.m., and I would like to invite any of you to join me on a job training experience. You work on campus and get paid a once a month, but we learn of how to handle things. It depends on where you would like to be, with fun activities, and hands-on participation. So, meet me at the above location and have a safe weekend! LOU

It's hard to say goodbye

Well it has finally come. We're here at the end of the summer period. I am glad I had a chance to meet all of you. Learning is about experiencing new things, places, and people. I will miss Bella's comments, or the way we would all hurry into class, take our seats, and open up our books. I will miss the talk between Kyle and I, or learning the strong attributes of Naomi. Or the talks between Paulene, Kiko and the rest of EN-085 class. Our path to educational success is our own. I hope we will meet each other again, but I'm glad I had this moment with all of you. I hope you all achieve your goals, and don't stop if you run into speed bumps. They're there to show you what you're made of, and it's how you overcome them that proves your determination, so good luck!

Farewell to everybody!

I would like to thank Dr. Rivera for encouraging me to work hard. Because of her positive attitude towards writing, I was able to face the challenges, and learn the importance of writing. I believe my effort of completing my work on time was a great commitment that I had for this class. Also, I learned to engage in class discussions. It was interesting to hear my classmates’ voices. Indeed, I was able to share my experience throughout my writing. I enjoy my time in class, and I am hoping to move to the next level. In the end, I would like to thank everyone for sharing your time with me.

The Finale

With the Final Composition over and done, I can finally breathe. Well, ALMOST breathe. Being in EN085 has not only taught the least I should know about English, but being able to inspire and be inspired. Sharing our experiences and stories has never failed to give me aspiration and making my dreams a reality. Comparing my attitude towards EN085 from the beginning of the session until now, I'm glad to have stayed and believe my dreams will prevail. I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed being in a remedial English course, but EN085 has revealed many ideas that I was unable to see in my own terms.
Seeming that this entry has a lot of self-reflecting, I must give credit to my fellow classmates and teachers that certainly have given me the encouragement and support I needed.

Good luck, everyone! Catch your dreams. Reach for the stars. Walk to the top of the mountains. Do what you love and love what you do.
I believe in all of you as much as you have believed in me.

Much love, Sharlene.

Final Composition is Over!

FINAL COMPOSITION IS OVER!

Finally Session B is ending. So let's get those books out of our way, and let's hit the beaches. It's our turn to relax. Same goes to you Professor Rivera.

Good night everyone, and I can't wait for the last day. I will miss everyone.

The head of Luttuce

Hi you all? If I was a head of lettuce, I'll cut myself into...I'll give my leaves to all my friends, and save my heart for you? Say guys, are able to blog, after tomorrow? So how does everyone feel about today's Composition? Myself, probably short of page, but other than that, I hope the main ingredients are there, so see you all tomorrow, or send me a breath of fresh air. I look forward to seeing you! LOU

"The victory of success is half won when one gains the habit of work."
~Sarah Knowles Bolton

The victory of success is contributed when one gains the habit of setting goals and achieving them. No matter how lazy we are, every little task we do everyday is important in the habit of work. If we do every work that is given, it will bring us closer to fulfill our dreams.

My Mid term...

Hi! Dr.Rivera and everyone!
Our class is almost over... I am really sad :(
Now I am studying for Mid term for tomorrow in my ID-180 class...
I don't know what should I study, so I'll just look at the many handouts that my teacher gave me.
Well, I will see you guys tomorrow!
I'm sleepy but I can't sleep yet... ha

Well is this Good bye?

Well we have reached our ending time in this EN-085 and it's been fun. I will miss the people I've met, and I can't wait to see what the future holds. Maybe we will see each other in different classes? Who knows what will happen, but it's an adventure nonetheless. If I don't see any of you, just know each of you has a certain gift, a talent that is unique in itself; I hope you build on it! I also hope to see you when we march as graduates of this University of Guam. Till then, we are the subject of change, but that's the great thing about change; you never know what's coming. That's why I think it's so inviting. SHOOTS!

I don't know how I got this picture but it just popped up in my computer, so I copied it. I really like this class very much because I learned a lot, and I'm so thankful to have Dr. Rivera as our professor. I'm glad that everyone is friendly. Anyways, we all look so pretty and the guys in the back are like hunks. I also like the way Sharlene posed!

quote

Here's my quote and I'm not sure if I wrote it right, also I'm not good saying my quote out to the class again.

“When a man feels throbbing within him the power to do what he undertakes as well as it can possibly be done, this is happiness, this is success.” –Orison Sweet Marden

When a man is at the end of his goal, he knows that in order to exit the final level he has to finish by giving out his best. As his heart pounds fast, will he pass the test that he wants reach and where he wants to go? It’s never easy to pass, but soon when it’s over, he has the end results. We can never tell of what the future holds within him. If he's lost, then he has to try again till he gets it right, but if he won, then he knows that he's got what he wants, that what he learned will apply in life like nothing. Happiness and success is really what you finally accomplish in a taste of victory.

Summer session is finally ending on Friday! Wooo HOOO!! I can't wait! I think I want to take a small trip to Thailand. Thailand is one of my things on my need to do list. The beauty, the food and the gorgeous buildings. What is one of the places you would like to vacation to?

I have math problems....

Now that this English class is almost finished, my Math is starting to beat me down. I found this picture of a math problem and thought it was amusing.

Still have

We are finally done with back-up compositions,
but this isn't done yet.
We still have three type write
assignment to do from J. Cruz,
and F.I.N.A.L..

It's Friday and we all know what that means. Stay alert, because there is a deadly virus that is out there waiting for its new victim. And to those that drink and drive, always have a designated driver with you. You never know about those crazy, drunk people out there. Have a nice weekend and may God bless you and your family.
The last week of this summer semester is finally here. No matter what kind of topic that the English department people will give us, we will do our best to finish the final composition. For now, let’s practice and good luck.

Have a great weekend everyone! (^_^)

prutehi hao

Prutehi HAO, This means, Protect yourself! With this virus going on at our hospital, it's nasty.
Cocoon, yourselves, everyone; it's sweeping through our Island. I have a nurse, friend and she says there is one patient who is close to her death bed at this time. So you all have a good weekend, and be safe. Take Care, ne, LOU

We are almost done!!

Hello everyone! We are coming to the last stretch of the summer session semester. With our second back-up composition done, we have one final composition on Thursday. Hopefully, they give us a good topic that we all know and write about. Remember to get some good rest before Thursday. Other than that, we have our Potluck on Friday, our last day! Woo Hoo! Have a wonderful weekend, I'll see you all bright and early on Monday morning!

Weight on my shoulder

Does anyone else feel like the weight of the course became lighter and easier to manage? Now that we finished our 2nd back-up compostion and are already two thirds of the way done, I can't fathom the idea of leaving this course.
sigh...
Have a great weekend everyone and see you Monday!

Finally, back-up composition is finished. I think I did fine on writing the essay. I cannot wait for the grade to come out. I'm hoping that we all pass this class and move to the next level. Have a great weekend and take care everyone!! Oh and Dr. Rivera, thank you for the pickles; it was good!!

Quote

"You don't become enormously successful without encountering and overcoming a number of extremely challenging problems." - Mark Victor Hansen

That is so true. Success comes with a high price with sacrifices of hardwork and time. You learn from your mistakes and go on, and that's how you will succeed.
We just finished writing our 2nd back up composition. I hope that it's strong enough with less grammar error. It was pretty hard for me because I have to think of two essays, one for English and the other one for seminar for success. Then I still have a group project and work. So I make sure I stay up at night to finish all my work. It's stressful but I'm glad that it pushes me to the limit. Its good to be challenged at times, because it feels good to accomplish things. So one more composition to go and we are done! I hope we all make it to the next level! Good luck!
Back up composition is due today, and I am getting worried that I might be failing this class. I will try my best to pass so I could move up to the upper level.

My Eyes!

Hello everyone! Well like kaori, I saw the eclipse yesterday. I thought it was really cool. Although, you are not supposed to look straight into the sun, I did. Ya, I know I was too lazy to pull out a sheet of paper. I wasn't blinded too bad, it was cloudy. So I did see the real thing. Hope you all experienced it. It's not coming back til the year 2132.
This past week has been so hectic. With the Liberation Day Parade, the Solar Eclipse, the Back-Up Composition(s), and my first week at work, I need time to catch my breath!

Tomorrow's the Back-Up Composition #2. Good luck, everyone!

Did you see...?

Hi, everyone :)

Did you decide what you will write about tomorrow??

I'm still thinking...

By the way, did you see the eclipse yesterday??

I saw the beautiful eclipse from UOG. It was not a full eclipse, but it was so pretty.

My friend said she saw the full eclipse yesterday in Japan, and she sent me a picture. It is really nice, so I want to share it with you guys.

Isn't it beautiful?? This eclipse is like a golden ring!

Hello, everyone!
It is almost the end of the week, and the second back-up composition is tomorrow. I believe everyone is trying to find a new topic. I am still thinking about what to write about. I am glad that I finished all the moodle sessions today! I learned many things throughout the discussion online. I got to share my interests with my classmates. Also, I learned all the grammar rules. It was interesting to read my classmates' essay and their thoughts. Good job everyone!!

Thought it was FUNNY!

www.pofile.blogspot.com

Face to face with reality

Well what's up good people of the EN 085! Just dropped in again to give some more thoughts from off my dome. It seems as I walk through life I am in a state of wanting, and wanting what you may ask? Well wanting my personal situations in my life to change; you could say its selfishness. However, to me it feels as if we all must face reality even though we want more, or even want the things that are made up of fantasy. Why you may ask am I saying this? Well, the reality is we all will face the funnel effect. What is the funnel effect you may ask? Well a Professor Stone out of New Jersey's sussex county community college said, "that in the beginning we have many choices, but as time moves on our choices become smaller and smaller and smaller." To the point when all you have is the choice on whether to live or die; hence the funnel effect! People tend to think that this won't happen to them, but as reality hits you in the face like a hard brick, they try to become as thin as they once were in high school, or they try to go out and live as they once did when they were twenty. This is the beginning of the funnel effect, and the road after becomes even more rough. So because of this I push forward taking chances after chances hoping to feel the freedom of when I was young. Unfortunately, the truth is as much as I try I will never again be at the top of the funnel, and I have to accept the road in front of me. So to those that will make life altering decisions I say this, "The choices we make dictate the life we lead, so be careful!"
Last Monday, my sons had to travel to our place by themselves to visit their grandparents in Chuuk. I feel so lonely every time I come home and they're not there. The house is so quiet without them. When I come home from work in the evening, all I have to do is miss them. Sometimes I stay out so I can enjoy the time, but I just feel so empty.
Hi classmates and Dr.Rivera

I am relieved that we are through with our first back up composition, and we are expecting the second one. I am praying that I will pass this class. I'm getting to old to be retaking it next semester.

Monday, July 20, 2009

YaY

YaY!! I'm so glad we are done with our first composition! The second one should be much easier. Good luck to everyone in my class!!

Title of this drawing is "Will you grow if I feed you?" I hope my English & writing skills keep growing to have arms, legs, organs, and bones to create a body. Right now, I only have a head and I can't go anywhere with that. I'm just going to keep on feeding!

Hi Classmates,
What a sigh of relief, knowing we've just finished our very own first back-up composition. I hope we all did a good job in writing our essays. Although we have ample time to prepare for it, at least today we're all done.
Enjoy the rest of the Liberation Day tomorrow, and please be reminded to be ready with our 2nd composition that is due on Friday, 24th of July 2009.
Adios!

.
Good luck to everyone on the back-up composition and see you all Monday. I'm going to catch up with my sleep now. Have a good night.

I still have to decide on what topic am I going to write about. Maybe something that I'm interested in and a topic that I have knowledge about, so I don't have to cram thinking of what I am going to write. Good luck to all of you! See you all on Monday and have a great weekend.
It's Friday!! I'm still thinking what to write for my back up composition.
I have several topics that I want to write about, but I'm still debating.
This weekend, I'll take my time to write the essay in 40 min. I believe
my topic will concern about my interests. Good luck to everyone and have
a great weekend!!

I MISS YOU GUYS!

Hello CLASSMATES!
I really MISS ALL OF YOU!
It's been FOREVER!!!!!
GOODNESS, can't wait to see you all when we
go BACK!
Typing a blog for this week again and this week are all about moodle. Some of the assignments there is hard, because I'm not sure what to write about it. I have writer's block and I'm not going to do well in the Back-up Composition on Monday, since I blank out a lot in my head.

Bye and I'll see everyone again on Monday....

Back-up Composition 1

So I have some topics in mind that I would like to write about. Although, I need to stick with one that I know most about. This will be easier to write about, not to mention, to write faster. 40 minutes right?

Thursday, July 16, 2009

Hi!

HI! EVERYONE!!!
How are you today?
Did you guys decide what you write on 20th??
I didn't decide yet.. haha
I need to find something this weekend...

Have a good weekend!
I miss you guys!
These past few days, I've been doing my work late at night, but I do it just on time. The Moodle sessions were interesting. I see the progress in every essay I read. I also learned something new from my classmates that I did not know before.
In addition, I had a hard time doing my essay late at night because my computer shut down on me, so I had to rewrite my Moodle work. I learned my lesson not to do my work late at night. Life is about learning from your own mistakes. I hope that does not happen to me again.
Good night everyone!! Take care!

GoodNight My Classmates & Dr. Rivera!

It's 10:10p.m. and I'm finishing up my moodle room. This week's moodle was basically all abut writing an essay and submitting it online. It was rough at first, but i manage to handle at the end of this week. I'm sorry that i submitted some assignment late Dr. Rivera. I hope you can forgive me. So it's already my bed time everyone. Goodnight and see you all tomorrow.
Day at the Field House!!!!!

Well spending the day at the Field House is just another experience for me. I could say that it's the first experience to be alone with all different type of nationalities. I noticed people from my place but I just never seen them before. I did make friends with some people from another islands in the Pacific region. It was a great opportunity for me to communicate with different types of people. I was really cold and tired, but it was worth it. I was able to visit the other exhibit other than the one coordinated by Dr. Rivera.

Frustration

I am in full of anxiety waiting for Monday to come. Moodling assignment is overwhelming with 3 possible essay (because I'm not sure if today's assignment is 5 paragraph essay) that I have to write nights in a row. When the title is given, I feel like I can start typing away looking at my blank page, but, it's not so easy. The time eats away and not only this issue. I do not have time to think about my final composition.

Question?

On our back up composition, we can write about anything?
Does it have to have a thesis statement?

Topic?

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a topic and if we can use one of the assignments we did to write about on the back-up composition ?

Thanks,
Kyle

staring to critical think!

Hi Dr!

Should be seeing you on Friday, Marian and I moved in to the computer center for the past two days. How are you, should have seen, outside people took over our first period class, so we relocated into our class room, talk about confused? Where, where who? It was so funny.
Still, asking about you, that's why my topic is I'm starting to critical thinking here Doc. We are just hanging on to the railing that points to computer center. See you when I see you...keosette! Take Care. Si, LOU

Blog for July 8, 2009

I know it's so late, but it better then never.
Well on July 8, 2009 I learned about writing skills, narration, and description.
Brief summary:
Writing Skills is similar with writing in your own voice. All writing "speaks" on paper and the person "listening" is the reader.
Narration writing tells the reader a story, and since most of us like to tell stories, it is a good place to begin writing in your own voice.
Description writing paints pictures with wordds that appeal to the reader's five senses-sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.
I enjoyed learning this section, because I'm invloved in writing more and letting my essay form the way I want it to be.
Dr. Rivera,
I now understand what to do on yesterday's assignment#8. Is it alright if I post it up today though?

Wants and Needs

Isn't it funny in life when we want somthing we only get what we need. This stated by the famous Rolling Stones in a song where they wrote, Where Mic Jagger said and I quote, "You can't always get what you want, but you can get what you need."

Unfortunately, how true this statment is. I myself wish for things but only instead obtain what's needed. So I guess the question to ask is; Is it good to dream if we only get what we need? Or should we strive for more in our everyday lives? I say we should because tomorrow is not promised, and I'd rather take every opportunity and get a yes or no answer then to be left with what if. Also who cares if you don't do everything right; everyone as we know has secrets, problems, and anxieties so screw off! to those people that would just rather sit in the mud and judge others. They can't live life they rather play by the rules, and stay in there little perfect worlds and think that they are perfect. To them I say this: This country and our fore fathers founded this great nation called America with the risk of death. I ask you to those that would judge me! What would happen if they just sat down, and played by the rules and only did what was needed would we be here? or is wanting more a better solution?
My laptop caught a virus and freezes everything, so I have to bring it to Micropac to fix it. I stayed their for three hours yesterday and they couldn't find the problem. The only way to remove the virus was to restore my computer, meaning all my files will be erase. All my doucument was erased and so are my pictures, but I got it now and it's working properly. As long as it works, I'm happy with it, so I posted a poem, I hope you guys like it. I think it's a good poem. It shows the chracter of how to be a winner . I think we're already making our steps into becoming a winner because we are all trying to persue a degree. I'll see you all in class. Bye!

Freedom Writers

Hey guys, Have you guys seen this movie
called "The Freedom Writers" ?

The movie is based on a true story.

"Motivation gets you going and habit gets you there. Make motivation a habit and you will get there more quickly and have more fun on the trip."
-Zig Ziglar

When I think about motivation, it requires a lot of will. If that will is a habit, all your goals are made easier to achieve and obstacles less intimidating. It's not easy to break bad habits, but never impossible. Why should we be stressed from trying to get to where we want to be? Your goal will never be reached without the journey. It's awesome how a journey could be so unsightly, yet with the power of our will, we find ourselves still pulling through. So get on that road to success and have fun!
Yo Peoples! I wanted to find out what each of you are bringing for the potluck on Friday, July 31st. Please let me know as soon as you know. The sooner, the better. Bring your best dish! YUMMM!

I'll be sure not to eat breakfast that morning.

The quote for today.

"Part of success is preparation on purpose"

Jim Rohn

My interpretation is you can never have success without planning your goals to achieve them!

Sweet and simple.

Determined to locate an image.

Determine to provide a photo:

Hi Dr.? Did I do it? Greetings, from Tamuning,
Beautiful day I say, but I think my blog is marvelous. Sometimes, I'm scared to click on something that I may just lose the whole thing. But with a little determination, I'll try to make that puzzle fit. Maybe I should print out my assignment #9 An Influential Person , so I can make my analyzations on paper and use my revision skills. What do you think? I think it sounds like a winner. Oh by the way, my apartment's name is Winner Apartments. hugh,.. ok ne Dr., you have a good one as well. Keosukette. Take Care. Si, LOU

UOG wine tasting event

The UOG Alumni Association, the School of Education (SOE) and the UOG Endowment Foundation hosted a wine tasting event on July 9, 2009 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Meskla restaurant in Hagatna. Speakers disscussed about reaching out to UOG Alumni to assist with the university's fundraising efforts. I attended the event which to my surprise not many Alumni were present to support their Alma Matar. Also, I got a chance to meet more of the UOG faculty and the barley present Alumni. I met Dr. Jeff Barcinas (former UOG vice president), Helen Whippy (UOG academic vice president), Frank Blas (former Lt. Governor), David Okada (UOG staff), and of course Dr. Rivera (who we all know) at the event. As a closing note we, UOG Alumni and current students, should support our university in its fundraising efforts because we all will benefit from the results. Don't worry if you missed this event UOG is still planning more to come, so keep an eye out for a chance to support our university.

Youtube lesson

This guy is good. Check it out ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCuExRE6N-4&feature=fvsr

This week, we learned how to write a thesis statement. It is the most important part of the essay,
and it is difficult to decide. I believe by practicing writing essay, I would be able to write well thesis statement. I hope everyone can write well written essay for mid-term.
Have a safe weekend!!
Just doing a blog this week. What I learned from class is more about writing skills like freewrite and clustering. At least, it will help me put some ideas on my paper.

Really Sick!

Hello everyone! I apologize if I was not present today in class. I was home sick with the stomach flu that is. No, I don't have the swine flu, just plain ol' bad weather, kids sniffling, everyone passing it around in the house and getting sick. Did I miss anything interesting? Hope you all had fun!

By the way, I need to make a list for the last class day potluck! Bring your best recipes to the table. I will see you all on Monday, rise and shine!

Have a great weekend and wash your hands.....

What is the recipe for successful achievement?

"What is the recipe for successful achievement? To my mind there are just four essential ingredients: Choose a career you love, give it the best there is in you, seize your opportunities, and be a member of the team. In no country but America, I believe, is it possible to fulfill all four of these requirements."

Benjamin Fairless

Fairless oversaw the world's largest iron and steel producer with total assets over $2 billion.

I think what this quote is say is to make sure you do what it is you love to do. A career should be something that you enjoy. Why would you want to go to work knowing that it is not making you happy? Second, you should give the best in you all the time. When you put your heart into something it will show in the end. To seize your opportunities means to take charge, take hold of what comes to you. You never know when you will get the chance for it to be offered again. And last, be a team player. No matter where you are or who you deal with, you must always be patient and learn to work with others. If you combine all of these, then you will be successful in your life, but in your heart.

Musical FREEdom in one's self

I've always enjoyed music I loved the way it made me feel when I would sing or rap. I loved the way I could connect to it and have the freedom to express what ever I wanted. Even when moments in my life when it was hard or depressing. I found that music could releasethose troubles with greatest of ease. In life I see that there are rules to live by standards, and morals that society deems to be correct and normal. Thankfully, I'm glad there's no rules in music! No bounderies to limit you!, that I think is the essence of true freedom. There's no person to say "Hey you shouldn't write about infidelity!" or "Your music is too provocative and I'm going to tell the authorities to make you stop!"
They can never stop me! Music is freedom and there is freedom in music so to those that would criticize I say "Turn off the radio then!"
Because I will always push myself, and my creativness to the limit to test what I'm made of. I will use risky ideas in music that might make people shun me from their seats, but in that I gain a great reward that is what I say will effect you whether you like it or not, and that is what makes me FREE! or quite simply frankieFREE!

Transitions

Hello my classmates,
Lately, it’s been raining and I hate driving in the rain back and forth to UOG. This week, we learned about how to write narration and description essay. I hope everyone gets use to those kinds of writing, and be able to use them for the back up composition.
Here are some transitions that can help you. (I got it from my notes from high school)

Transition to let readers know that a digression is about to begin or end: Anyhow, anyway, as I was saying, at any rate, by the way, incidentally, to change the subject, to get back to the point, to return to the subject, to resume.

Transition to move readers into specific examples: As an illustration, especially, for example, for instance, including, in particular, namely, notably, particularly, specifically, to demonstrate, to illustrate.

I hope these will help you in your essay. GOOD LUCK everyone!!

Hello :)

Hi! Dr. Rivera and everyone!
I don't have any good topic for mid-term...
I was brain storming but I think I need to change my topic :(
Did you guys decide your topic already?
Hello there! What a weather we're having! I just wanted to say HI to all my classmates and Dr. Rivera. Let's not let the bad weather put us down today. Let's get out and do what has been scheduled for us to do. God bless us all, and let's enjoy the rest of our school days.

Rainy day

Wow! It is pouring in rain today. Such a bad day to go to charmorro village. :S We are finally getting into real source of "How to write an essay" and I'm totally excited. With a mid-term and 2 back-up composition coming up, we all know we are going to get busy. Let's get the party started!

HELLO CLASSMATES!

Hello there everybody, just doing my blog for this week. With only a few more weeks left of school we all feel the anxiety of the Final Composistion, HOWEVER just remember what Dr. Rivera has been teaching us and we should all be just fine.

*Remember all the quotes she made us think and interpret on, they should help get us by!

Self reflection midterm

Greetings everyone,

The midterm is not due until the 13th, but I'm worried that I might rush it and not turn in quality work. I'm having a trouble with what to begin with on the midterm. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on this subject?

Thanks for your assistance in this matter.

The increasing demand

Well, what's good people of the collective minds for higher learning. We have begun our session C, and the demand on us students is becoming more and more paramount. The more I see that we want to graduate to get our degrees, the more I see that the demand on us will increase. Especially when we transform under to upper graduates, but no matter the hardships, we must prevail to no end. For if we are to succeed, we must "battle" so good luck to you and keep it up, and by all means "Don't give up!"
Quote #2

"I do not think there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature." John D. Rockefeller

Yes, I do believe that there is nothing we can do unless we try and try more harder in order to succeed in life. Perseverance is the quality to success and overcomes everything, even nature. So just try harder and we will be successful in life and nothing will ever stop us.

Midterm Self-Reflection

  1. Organizing an Essay: Bulleted Lista. Label your topic, weather its "The Cow Jumps Over The Moon."
2. Be a sure that if someone reads the story, that it's about, the cow that jumps over the moon
not the stars?
b. What we're after is, we want to pull that persons interest, so that the person can enjoy
the story, as it was told?

3. Maybe the interested person never had a chance before, and the title caught his eye.
c. So now that he's happy and satisfied, he may share it with a friend.

4. What does it do for you?
d. Well, maybe he's just now started himself a miniature library.

Now a thesis statement: Tom walked by the library window and wants to by this book.

" The Cow that Jumps Over The Moon"

Now a thesis statement without, a subject and a verb, would be:

It's 10:00a.m. let's see if anyone would interest my book.

A Reflective essay is essentially your thoughts on a subject specifically what you have learned. Before writing, collect all the materials that refer to the study you completed. Be honest about the weak & strong points of your study and determine how it can be improved.

A day after Independents Day.

Oh, a Sunday after Independents Day, still catching up with homework, yesterday, by 4:00p.m.
my brothers girlfriend, called me, to invite for her sons party, at 6:00p.m. and told me the location
of the party, however, in my mind, what registered, was my rest, and my school work, so, mentally & phically deleted, that right away, and rested somemore. Today, I thought, that, I should call her up and tell her that, my homework is so important, only because, summer is almost over. I just don't want her to think I'm antisocial, since I started school.....Oh well, if its, for food, I have food, here at home, then again, I prepared, tuna salad, incase, I 'm counting my minutes.
So, you all have a good one, and see ya, when I see you. LOU

It really helps to know Tommy!

Wow, what a big difference! This guy Tommy, is the saver, of all undone homework, you my classmates, can imagine. Then, again, checkout the name of the Holiday? What's the name of the July 4th? Come on, tell me, ..right, Independence Day.
Now, I would like to share my Independence Day with you all.
I was able to do my homework, and praying that I don't receive a "no homework shown" from our teacher. Because of this, I empathize of how one expects what one is waiting for of you. But, I was very attentive, during our orientation, that if you sit in the front, and you ask as much questions, you will never get caught behind. So, I am sorry, if I always seem to raise my hand, and talk aloud. I would like to label my blog, but I guess I still have to swim my way to knowing how?? Well, if any of you are kind enough, your welcome to lead my way, but no pressure, on this, ne, take care all of you and have a safe INDEPENDENCE DAY!!! Smile...LOU AGUON

Word Joke....

Did you hear about the agnostic dyslexic insomniac?

He lay awake one night wondering " Is there really a dog?"

I though this was funny since we're in an English course.

No offence to anyone...

3rd Week 2nd Post

On this week, I've learned how to use punctuation, commas, and capital letters. Working on exercises with classmates were more stimulant than the moodle.

To Be Inspired

I've watched this movie Saint Ralph and it's about a boy in the 1950s who struggles with being teased at school as well as worrying about his ill mother who is in a coma. Hoping to make a miracle, he joins the cross-country team and is determined to win the Boston Marathon.

For those who have not heard of this movie, I would recommend you watch it. It's destined to touch your heart and believe in the impossible.

There are some things that require more than hard work and endurance. Sometimes you just have to believe in your dreams.

Quote #2

"Personal development is your springboard to personal excellence. Ongoing, continuous, non-stop personal development literally assures you that there is no limit to what you can accomplish." Brian Tracy

What you choose, what you do defines you. Some people may think they're perfect. Some people continuously work themselves towards to excellence.

Manukai Athletic Club

Has anyone ever heard of Manukai Athletic Club Swim Team here on Guam?

Well this team so happens to be my swim team. I am the Head Swim Coach that oversees the teams' needs and goals. I have actually trained with this club for 10 years. I started when I was 7 years old, and from there on out I lived and breathed swimming. When I was able to compete for the off-island competitions, my training was very exhausting. It was a lot of hard work and dedication. The first time I ever swam the Cocos Crossing, I was 8 years old. Now, I coordinate the Cocos Crossing events. I am very happy that I didn't quit so soon. In a way I've learned to have more discipline with myself in everyday life. I believe that no matter how much you feel like quitting, to never give in to it. You will look back and see all your progress to pay you back in many ways.

I just wanted to share something about myself. Hope you all have a great holiday weekend!

Oh! And if you are interested in having your child or know someone who would like to have their child learn how to swim, just let me know. Ages 4 and up.
Happy 4th of July everyone!
Hope all of you enjoy your Independence Day during the weekend.

See you on Monday!

Let's celebrate Independence Day!

Hello everyone,
It's Friday! It's about time to celebrate Independence Day. I'm sure most us are busy preparing our favorite food for a potluck celebration at home, at the beach, or at a friend's house. Later in the afternoon, there's so much to enjoy and celebrate Independence Day at Polaris Point in Piti. There's fireworks, entertainment, lots of food and games, and music. You and your family have to be early for closer parking and be reminded that weapon, personal fireworks, grills, coodlers, pets, alcohol, skate-boards and roller-skates are prohibited. Have fun and drive safely.

Adios!
This week, we learned about avoiding clichés, awkward phrasing, wordiness, and also learned about rules for punctuation and comma. The studies are getting complicated, and I feel like I need to go back and take time to review. I still had an awesome time with my classmates. We even got to visit computer room. Now, we all know that we can go there anytime if we need to print something for free. I hope everyone enjoy their Forth of July. Take care!!! :)
Days goes by so fast. It's already July and we're all preparing for our back up composition. Our final composition is on July 31st. I have to review all the grammar rules that I learned in class. I also have to think of what I'm going to write and compose a draft. Quotes that we present in class is very helpful to me, because it makes me think that writing about success, goals, and hardwork is a good sample of essay writing. So good luck to all of you and happy 4th of July. I'll see all of you on Monday.

Today's Lesson

Today's lesson was filled with excitement and happiness in the morning. We started out the class great and ended it the same, but earlier than i expected. Learning something different and new is always a great way to increase our learning abilities. For instance, today we learned the other three rules of punctuation. It was a challege, but if we keep practicing we will get it. So todays lessons was very fun and great. I learned a lot today, and I'm hoping to learn more til the last day.

Wednesday, July 1, 2009

This summer I have enjoyed working and learning all the details in our English classes. I am glad that I started my school during summertime. It is a faster way for me to get my 085 classes out of the way. But at the same time it is a shorter semester and I do need to put more time into my studies. Other than that, I have had fun with the assignments. And I am also having fun interacting with my classmates. I hope you all have a wonderful 4th of July! Take care and be safe!

Today's event

Today, we learned about punctuation and comma rules. I think it's really simple once you memorize all the rules for them. The exercises helped me review the rules. I learned that the punctuation is important because it can help the reader understand the sentences. I hope everyone does not get confuse when you put comma before the word and. Keep in mind that if the subject is talking about the same thing, it is unnecessary to put comma before the word and. Good luck!!

Quote of the day

"The Successful always has a number of projects planned, to which he looks forward. Anyone of them could change the course of his life overnight."
-Mark Caine

To me I think this quote is about how someone who is successful has many different plans with back-ups. Take for instant an entrepreneur who always has the ability to take on several plans and projects at once, this way if one project fails, there will be several others in line to take its place and lead the person to success. With every path we take to get to reach our dreams, each one can change our life dramatically in a instant. By choosing a path, we change the course of our lives just by making choices.

Quote

" Choice, not circumstances, determines your success."-Anonymous

I think it means you can be born into a rich family and still fail, just the same as you can be born into poverty and have great success in life.

Success for one person is not necessarily, success for someone else.
